Underneath the Dome of the Rock

Underneath the Dome of the Rock

The main picture above shows the stairways leading down to the small cave underneath the Rock. The picture inset shows an internal view.

- This cave has been called ‘The Well of Souls’ (Arabic: Bir el-Arweh) as some believe this is where the souls of the dead gather to wait for the event of Judgement Day. However, this is a myth as is the notion that the rock above it is floating without any support.

- According to some reports, when the Crusaders took control of Jerusalem they massacred many Muslims on top of the rock. There is a hole in the rock which leads to the cave below through which the blood of the slaughtered fell through and down into a well in a corner of the cave. When Salahuddin Ayyubi retook Jerusalem he had the well levelled. If you stamp in the corner you will realise that the ground underneath is hollow.
