|
This small structure (close to the mosque of Yunus a.s.) contains the grave of Abdullah bin Mas’ood (r.a.); one of the most eminent companions of Rasulullah (s.a.w.). The olive tree on the left is believed to be more than 1400 years old.
- Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood (r.a.) is one of those eminent Sahabah who were entrusted with the task of issuing Fatwa, even during the Prophet’s time. He had been in the fold of Islam since its advent and was one of the emigrants to Abyssinia. He accompanied the Prophet (s.a.w.) in all his campaigns and worked as his attendant. He carried the shoes of the Prophet (s.a.w.), provided him with a pillow when he needed one and brought him water for his wudhu. He was therefore called ‘The Keeper of the shoes’, ‘The Keeper of Pillow’ and the ‘Manager for Wudhu’. The Prophet (s.a.w.) once said:
“Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood (r.a.) is the only person whom I can safely appoint as an Amir (leader) without consulting anybody.”
- He was permitted by the Prophet (s.a.w.) to visit him at all times. The Prophet (s.a.w.) is reported to have said:
“If you want to recite the Quran as it was revealed to me, then copy the recitation of Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood”
“Believe in what Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood narrates about me.”
- Abu Moosa Ash’ari (r.a.) says:
“Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood (r.a.) and his mother visited the Prophet (s.a.w.) so often and were so at home there that the Yemen people, who had come to see the prophet (s.a.w.), took him to be one of the ‘Ah-lul-Bai’ (family member).”
- Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood (r.a.) attained such a knowledge of the Quran that he would say, "By Him besides Whom there is no god, no verse of the book of God has been revealed without my knowing where it was revealed and the circumstances of its revelation. By God, if I know there was anyone who knew more of the Book of Allah, I will do whatever is in my power to be with him."
- Abdullah-bin-Mas’ood (r.a.) was the person who killed Abu Jahl, one of the greatest enemies of Islam in the battle of Badr.
- Note that Abdullah-bin-Masood (r.a.) is also reported to be buried in Jannatul Baqi in Madinah.
