Underneath the Dome of the Rock

The main picture above shows the stairways leading down to the small cave underneath the Rock. The picture inset shows an internal view.

- This cave has been called ‘The Well of Souls’ (Arabic: Bir el-Arweh) as some believe this is where the souls of the dead gather to wait for the event of Judgement Day.

- It is believed that when the Crusaders took control of Jerusalem they massacred many Muslims on top of the rock. There is a hole in the rock which leads to the cave below through which the blood of the slaughtered fell through and down into a well in a corner of the cave. When Salahuddin Ayyubi retook Jerusalem he had the well levelled. If you stamp in the corner you will realise that the ground underneath is hollow.
